Sartoria – Mayfair, London

What a great place for conversation! It might be that I was in very good company and just would not want to carry on with the rest of our busy days but it was a very nice overall experience indeed.

I had been at the restaurant in other occasions but it was mainly special events where the whole venue had been booked so not what I could refer to in this guide.

We were seated in the middle of the room and despite that the acoustics were just great. A little bit of buzz but we could not hear any of the conversations from the other tables and could hear each other perfectly.

We had Barbecued mackerel with cauliflower quinoa (forget the fact it says cauliflower quinoa – it was a tasty mackerel), Vitello tonnato (the prettiest version I have ever seen) and insalata di granchio as appetisers. Branzino al guazzetto di pomodoro ed erbe fini, spinaci con aglio e pepperoncino, tagliolini all’astice and parmigiana di melanzane (again very pretty presentation of an impossibly brown recipe). In terms of taste it was all how you would expect it to be – this might sound as little but if you consider how precise Italians are about how things should be done it is a high praise indeed.

The décor is soft, cosy and elegant – a bit of variety of textures and shades of colour, nice compositions at the counter and artwork.

Service is really great – highlight is definitely their Alfred Hitchcock lookalike sommelier – worth the trip just for him!
